RUSTON - Having played just three matches in the last three weeks, the Louisiana Tech tennis team will face off against UNO in New Orleans on Friday at 2 p.m. before coming back to Ruston to have its home opener against Grambling State on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
"I think this weekend we will find out how we are progressing," said head coach Chad Camper. "We can do all the right things in practice, but it only counts if we put it to use in matches. We are excited about having a lot of tough matches ahead."
LA Tech (2-1) returns to the Tennis Center in the Big Easy, a place where they brought home the Big Easy Tennis Classic championship this past fall season.
They will look to extend their two-match winning streak versus New Orleans (2-0) who has opened up the spring with convincing wins over Jackson State and Alcorn State.
"UNO has a deep lineup," said Camper. "Everyone will have to be executing in order for us to pull ahead. We need to come out aggressive and that all starts with doubles.
The Privateers are led by Soledad Calderon who is undefeated in singles at the No. 2 spot and at the No. 1 spot in doubles, partnering with Yasmine Rashad.
The Lady Techsters will then turn around to take on Grambling State (0-1) at the Louisiana Tech Tennis Complex.
"The women are excited about their first home match," said Camper. "There's something about playing a match in your own backyard that brings more excitement to the table."
GSU opened its spring season with a 7-0 loss at the hands of Oral Roberts.
