Lady Techsters Return Home to Face Nicholls State

Feb. 23, 2013

RUSTON -- The Louisiana Tech tennis team returns home Sunday to take on Nicholls State with the first serve set for 1 p.m. at the Louisiana Tech Tennis Complex.

LA Tech (1-2) has had little opportunity recently to battle on the courts with two of their last three matches postponed due to weather.

First-year head coach Freddy Gomez is eager for his players, in particular his two freshman Taly Merker and Manoela Chiacchio, to get back on the courts to continue developing team chemistry.

"We are getting more used to each other playing as a team in doubles and singles," said Gomez. "Each individual, especially the freshmen, are settling into the college format and the environment of it."

The Lady Techsters fell in their last dual match, a 6-1 loss at Stephen F. Austin, despite many sets being competitive.

"Our players are performing well for the most part, and continue to learn from each experience," said Gomez. "However, it's up to them to take what's theres when the moment calls for it. We have the determination to achieve as a group, but I know we have to believe we are deserving of all of these matches."

Junior Melanie Urvoy was the player who may have suffered the toughest loss to the Ladyjacks, her first singles defeat of the season. After taking the first set 6-3, she dropped the last two 6-2, 6-2 to SFA at the No. 2 spot.

Nicholls State (5-2) enters the match having played twice as many dual contests this spring as LA Tech.

After opening the season 0-2, the Colonels have reeled off five straight wins. Nicholls will take on LSU today before traveling to Ruston 24 hours later to take on the Lady Techsters.
