LA Tech Prepares for Three Matches in Three Days
March 10, 2018
RUSTON – The Louisiana Tech women’s tennis team looks to carry its momentum from its big win in the state of Florida to back home at the LA Tech Tennis Complex where they will face three opponents over the next three days.
The home stretch begins on Sunday at noon versus Incarnate Word. Then on Monday, the Lady Techsters will take on crosstown foe Grambling State at 4 p.m. Then on Tuesday, they will face off against ULM at 3:30 p.m.
LA Tech (3-4) has spent six of its first seven spring matches away from home. The lone home match came three weeks ago in a 4-1 win over Texas State.
Following a two-week break for finals, the Lady Techsters made a trip to the Sunshine State to face Florida Atlantic and Stetson.
After falling to C-USA foe FAU by a score of 5-2, LA Tech pulled off arguably its biggest victory this spring so far with a 4-1 victory over the Hatters of Stetson.
A big reason for the big win was the return of senior Angela Lorenzo (returning from a foot injury) who notched an impressive 6-2, 6-2 singles win at the No. 2 position. Another singles win came from junior Sonia Chen who ran her winning streak to three with a straight-sets victory herself at the No. 5 spot.
Incarnate Word (1-9) plays two dual matches on Saturday prior to taking on LA Tech. The Cardinals got their first win of the spring with a 4-3 victory over Prairie View A&M, but they have lost three straight since then to Texas State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and No. 38 Baylor.
UIW is led by Matea Zemunik who has registered a 5-4 singles mark at the top of the lineup.
This will be only the second time these two squads face off on the tennis courts. The Lady Techsters played the Cardinals in San Antonio last season and came away with a 7-0 shutout win.
Grambling State (3-6) will play dual matches on Sunday versus Incarnate Word and Henderson State prior to playing LA Tech on Monday.
The Lady Tigers opened the spring with four straight losses, but followed that up with three straight wins over Spring Hill, Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Mississippi Valley State. However, they have suffered 4-1 losses to Southern and Alcorn State since then.
Yuliia Popova has a team-best five singles victories for GSU. Monday will mark the 45th all-time meeting between the two teams separated by five minutes. LA Tech has won all 44 meetings.
ULM (6-4) comes into Tuesday’s match with impressive wins already this spring over Marshall, Troy and McNeese State. Top singles player Stefana Andrei has yet to lose a dual match with a perfect 5-0 mark.
This will mark the 33rd meeting in the series between the Lady Techsters and Warhawks. ULM has won the last five matches, including last year’s in Monroe by a score of 5-2.
