RUSTON -- After leading her team to wins over in-state foes Grambling State and Northwestern State, Louisiana Tech's Alexandra Starkova was announced today by the Western Athletic Conference as the Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the week of Mar. 11-17.
The freshman from Madrid, Spain remained undefeated on the season in singles and doubles after this past week.
She dispatched of GSU's Oluwatomisin Kassim 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 singles spot. She followed her performance up the next day in a marathon match at the No. 2 spot versus NSU's Tatiana Larina, ultimately clinching the 4-3 win for the Lady Techsters with a 6-2, 5-7, 7-5 victory.
In both matches, Starkova teamed up with fellow European freshman Joanna Nalborska at the No. 2 position to help clinch the doubles points.
Other nominees included Idaho's Aludena Sanz and New Mexico State's Ros-Polly Nguyen.
LA Tech returns to the courts on Thursday as they travel to San Jose, Calif. to begin conference play versus Texas State.
