RUSTON - The Louisiana Tech tennis team aims to continue its impressive winning streak this weekend as the Lady Techsters round out the regular season with two weekend matches versus non-conference opponents.
The first is a road contest on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. against future conference mate Southern Miss at the USM Tennis Courts, followed on Sunday by Senior Day at 2 p.m. at the Louisiana Tech Tennis Complex against Alcorn State.
LA Tech (12-4, 7-1 WAC) has been dominant as of late, winning six straight matches with only four points lost combined.
"Despite everything surrounding us this weekend, we want to remain discipline and continue approaching our matches with full ambition and motivation," said head coach Freddy Gomez. "If anything, we should compete with even more energy and hunger this weekend as it is the last of our regular season, and both teams we face are dangerous.
"We want to continue to make it about us and our philosophy. We want our team to compete in each match and against every opponent the same way, as a team, and not change based on the opponent or the day we are playing."
The Lady Techsters are currently in second place in the WAC standings and can fall no further than third after this weekend's final stretch of conference matches.
Southern Miss (0-19, 0-5 CUSA) has struggled this season on the courts as the Golden Eagles are still searching for its first win. Alexus Coats anchors the team from the No. 1 singles spot with a team-best 5-11 dual record.
Alcorn State made it all the way to the SWAC Championship last season before losing to Southern, 4-0. Most recently, the Lady Braves suffered a 7-0 setback at the hands of UALR.
"Vivian and Alena are great student-athletes and have really shown strong character on and off the courts," said Gomez. "It's been my pleasure to share with them some of their journey here at Louisiana Tech. I want to thank them both for their hard-work and dedication to the team, and I look forward to sharing more great experiences with them as we look to the conference tournament in Denver."
Free hot dogs and beverages will be served while supplies last, and the Techster team will offer a free Junior Clinic (ages 9-16) open to players of all levels upon the completion of their match.
