SUMTER, S.C. - With three consecutive wins in the qualifier, Louisiana Tech freshman Alexandra Starkova advanced to the main draw of the ITF Palmetto Pro Open at the Palmetto Pro Center in Sumter, S.C.
The Madrid, Spain native received a bye in the first round before cruising to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Kayla Price (USA).
Starkova proved dominant once again when she defeated Jemileth Aguilar (Venezuela) 6-4, 6-0.
With one more win needed to move into the field of 32, the first team All-WAC honoree faced her stiffest competition yet in Samantha Asch (USA).
After dropping the first set in what was a very slow start for Starkova, she recovered to take the match 0-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Asch held the No. 1 ranking in the USTA Middle States section 18-and-under rankings since the age of 14 and is currently a freshman at Wake Forest.
Starkova's first round match time and opponent in the main draw is to be determined.
