SUMTER, S.C. - Louisiana Tech freshman Alexandra Starkova was playing some of her best tennis at the end of the spring season.
That success has already carried over into the summer as she reached the round of 16 in the main draw of the ITF Palmetto Pro Open at the Palmetto Pro Center in Sumter, S.C.
"It was a great tournament because of the level of competition," said head coach Freddy Gomez. "You get very high junior players, current and former college players and professional players providing good competition. I'm very happy we were able to have a little bit of success as we set up for a good fall season."
It took three consecutive wins in the qualifier, including a 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 marathon win by Starkova to advance into the main draw.
In the first round, the Madrid, Spain native found herself down a set again, but was able to rally for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over Marie Norris (USA).
The tournament had over 100 participants from over 20 countries.
All of the returning Lady Techsters will continue to play in similar summer events in the states as well as internationally.
