Chen Receives All-Louisiana Honors
June 3, 2018
RUSTON – After a stellar year on the tennis courts, Louisiana Tech’s Sonia Chen was named All-Louisiana Honorable Mention by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association in a vote by the university sports information directors.
Chen posted a team-best 13-4 dual singles record in the spring while playing throughout the lineup from the No. 1 position all the way to No. 5. The 13 victories ended up being a new career high for the junior.
She reeled off a 12-match singles winning streak in the process, tying the program record, while dropping only two total sets during the streak that lasted from Feb. 18 to April 7.
The Taichung, Taiwan native went 2-2 in Conference USA play, including a 7-6, 6-3 win at Florida Atlantic (3/3) and a 6-1, 6-0 win over UTEP (4/7).
Combined with an incredible fall mark of 11-1 in singles, including two flight championships and the ITA Southern Regionals B Draw title, Chen ended the entire year with a 26-9 overall record.
She was just as dominant on the doubles court in the spring, registering a team-best 11-4 dual record while teaming up with two different teammates. She played mostly with freshman Claudia Oravcova, putting together a 10-3 mark at the No. 3 spot.
This is the first ever LSWA honor for Chen and marks the seventh straight year a Lady Techster has been named All-Louisiana.
