Montalvo was born in Mexico but currently resides in Katy, Texas. She joins fellow Mexican native Paulina Cota and Claudia Oravcova from Slovakia as the newest member of the Lady Techsters.
"Karla is a very focused player and I think that will really help her hit the ground running in her college career," head coach Amanda Stone said. "She is going to bring in a great work ethic and she has experience playing elite level tournaments.
"She had some very good schools to pick from so we are excited to be her choice and are thrilled to get a player who is really proud to play for Louisiana Tech."
Montalvo is a four-star recruit per TennisRecruiting.net and is currently ranked No. 13 in the state of Texas and 140th in the country.
The 5-foot-7-inch right-hander was recently the 2017 BARC New Year USTA open singles women's champion. She also has runner-up finishes in singles at multiple tournaments including the Girls 18 HTA Houston Open SCMZ, Centre Court Junior Slam and Fourth of July Junior Open.
In 2016, she reached the main draw of the 50,000 Copa Tampico before falling to Elise Mertens who is ranked 56th in the world.
Montalvo is also a two-time Katy Tennis Open singles champion and finished second in Girls 18 singles and first in Girls 18 doubles at the 2014 BCS Super Champ Major Zone.
