Sept. 19, 2013

RUSTON - The Louisiana Tech tennis team opens up the fall season this weekend at the second annual Big Easy Tennis Classic at the University Tennis Center in New Orleans, La.

The event begins Friday, Sept. 20 and runs through Sunday, Sept. 22 and features three different singles flights and one flight for doubles. Consolations will take place in each singles flight with all players guaranteed two matches.

LA Tech joins Alabama State, Jackson State, UL-Lafayette, Loyola (N.O.), New Orleans, Southern Miss, Troy, UL-Monroe and Nova Southeastern in the event with match play starting at 9 a.m. daily.

In doubles, the sophomore duo of Joanna Nalborska and Alexandra Starkova has a first round bye as the No. 1 seed.

The doubles tandem earned first team All-WAC last season after going a perfect 13-0, primarily at the No. 2 spot, marking the best single-season doubles record in program history.

Senior Melanie Urvoy will team up with freshman Jazmin Britos to take on Kesica Jayapalan and Angie Condorelli from Jackson State in the first round.

In flight one of singles, Nalborska enters as the No. 2 seed and Starkova as the No. 4 seed. Nalborska draws Alex Johansson of Nova Southeastern and Starkova goes up against Lyubov Dorofeeva of Troy.

In flight two of singles, Urvoy takes on Alex Kaesar of Nova Southeastern while Britos will battle Karina Gurgenyan of Southern Miss.

The fifth Lady Techster to compete in the tournament is sophomore Taly Merker in flight three of singles. Merker was one of four players to receive a bye into the second round and will face the winner of Angie Condorelli of Jackson State and Luisa Pintado of Nova Southeastern.
