Martinez, Uriarte Net Flight Title At Cougar Classic

HOUSTON, Texas -- The Tennis Techsters continued a strong fall showing in last weekend's Cougar Classic at the University of Houston.

Louisiana Tech's spirited play was highlighted by the doubles tandem of Avril Martinez and Saharai Uriarte, who took the Flight D doubles title.

The pair drew a bye in the first round of the Flight D doubles match before downing Texas Tech's team of Gyurgina/Gocheva 8-5 in the second round and Rice's duo of Fisher/Black 8-6 in the flight's finals match.

"That was a great showing, and the fact that we were able to beat a doubles team from a fellow conference school in the finals made it that much better," Tech coach Greg Hearn said. "There was some very talented competition at that tournament, and the way we played showed we're making strides during this fall season."

Fall season tournaments are usually played as individual matches with no teams scores kept.

"We've shown in our first two fall tournaments that we're putting together something special here," Hearn said. "We still have a long way to go, but we're making progress and think that will show once team play starts in the spring."

The Techsters will next compete in the Rolex Tournament in Arlington, Texas on Oct. 17-19.
