NATCHITOCHES, La. - Five Louisiana Tech players won back-to-back singles matches to advance to the finals of their flights on Friday, day one of the Lady Demon Invitational at the Jack Fisher Tennis Complex.

LA Tech got off to a shaky start in the morning with doubles play up first. Alexandra Starkova suffered an injury during the match forcing her and Joanna Nalborskato withdraw from flight one.

Taly Merker and Manoela Chiacchio suffered a setback as well, losing in flight two. However, the duo of Marta Sramkova and Jazmin Britos were able to advance to the semifinals as was Melanie Urvoywho teamed up with Anna Peacock of McNeese State in flight three.

Once singles play got going, the Lady Techsters stepped it up a notch winning 11 matches with only two losses, one of which was a withdraw by Starkova.

Singles began and ended in dramatic fashion for LA Tech. To start, Chiacchio fended off four set points in a first set tiebreaker to take it 13-11. It took another tiebreaker in the second set, but that one was won 7-5.

In the last game on court, Urvoy was able to overcome a couple of match points before going the distance with a 10-8 tiebreaker win in the third set.

Doubles matches will kick off tomorrow's action at 8:30 a.m. The singles championships will start at 10:30 a.m.
