Kelly Wins Consolation Bracket

LAFAYETTE, La. – Monica Kelly fell in the first round of the Pepsi Challenge host by UL-Lafayette this weekend, but ran through the Black Consolation Bracket to win Sunday morning.

Kelly defeated UL-Lafayette’s Chanell Meijer 1-6, 6-3, 10-6 to win one of the consolation brackets at this weekend’s event. After falling in the first round to Southeastern Louisiana’s Breda Kovac, Kelly went on to the win with victories over ULM’s Lena Stage, who withdrew with an injury and Maria Oprea from Arkansas State 7-5, 6-3 before the final against Meijer.

The rest of the Louisiana Tech tennis team was in action as well this weekend.

In the White Bracket, Caroline Tran fell to ULM’s Sharon Makhanya in the first round, and Ada Makowska lost to SELU’s Jana Simurkova in the first round as well. Makowska beat Stephen F. Austin’s Lauren Lowicki in the first round of the consolation bracket and fell to ASU’s Renee Branker. Tran lost to Sonja Nikolic from Houston.

Alexandra Gaspar lost to Ashlesha Lokhande from ASU in the first round of the Red Bracket.

In doubles action, the team of Makowska and Kelly lost to Catalina Villegas and Daniela Posada from Nicholls State in the first round of the Red Doubles Bracket. In the White Bracket Tran and Gaspar lost to Rane van Wyk and Lokhande in the first round.
