Tennis Techsters Play Strong At Pepsi Challenge

Louisiana Tech's doubles team of Avril Martinez and Monica Kelly are still alive in the Championship Doubles Flight of the Pepsi Women's Challenge tennis tournament after taking a first-round win on Friday at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

Martinez and Kelly took the win and moved on to round two after UNO's tandem of Particia Osedumme and Laetitia Zembski retired due to injury.

Tech's Flight B doubles pair of Katie Westbrook and Danielle Landry weren't as fortunate as they fell to Northwestern State's Camila Prado and Magali VandenBergh by the score of 8-3.

In other Championship Singles Flight action, Cecilia Varela of Lamar defeated Louisiana Tech's Avril Martinez 6-2, 6-2 while Arkansas State's Lucille Kleynhans topped Tech's Andrea Moncada 6-1, 6-1. Zembski of UNO added a 6-1, 6-3 win over Monica Kelly of Tech in Championship Singles Flight action.

Ready fell to Celine Vanweydeveld of Lamar 6-3, 6-0 in the second round of Championship Singles Flight action while Martinez, Moncada and Kelly all picked up Consolation Round wins.

Martinez (LT) defeated NSU's Alexandra Nieto 4-6, 7-6, 7-6, Moncada topped Lamar's Haley Bakker 6-0, 6-4 and Kelly downed Arkansas State's Lica Lucas 6-0, 6-0.

Westbrook took a Singles Flight B first-round win over Justine Vosloo of Southeastern Louisiana 6-4, 6-4 before falling to Lamar's Fernanda Kompatsher 6-0, 7-6 in quarterfinal play. Landry fell 6-0, 6-0 to Kathi Sadofsky of Southern Mississippi in Flight B first-round play before falling to Lamar's Beatriz DeRogil 6-2, 6-3 in a consolation match.

"We saw some pretty good play from our girls, which wasn't bad especially when considering that we held out some of our top players to give our younger players a little more experience," Tech coach Greg Hearn said. "This tournament is looking like a pretty good way to close out the fall season and start getting ready for team play in the spring."
