RUSTON -- Louisiana Tech Athletics Director Bruce Van De Velde announced today that the University has hired former Virginia Tech assistant women's tennis coach Freddy Gomez to be the new head coach for the Lady Techster tennis program.

"I am truly grateful and excited for the opportunity of joining the Louisiana Tech Family and developing success in the Techsters tennis team on and off the court," said Gomez. "My family and I are glad to be closer to home, and we look forward to being part of the Ruston community."

Louisiana is home for Gomez and his wife Julie, who is a native of Hammond. Gomez served as a private tennis coach while obtaining his masters of science in sports management from Louisiana State University in the spring of 2008.

Recently, Gomez served as an assistant coach for two and a half years with the Virginia Tech Hokies where he was responsible for multiple duties such as recruiting, promotions, scheduling, practices and administration.

While in Blacksburg, Va., he successfully recruited the No. 16 ranked player in the nation in the 2012 freshman class which led to Virginia Tech's entire class being ranked 16th nationally - one of the highest in program history.

In 2011-12, he helped develop the program's first ever two-times All-Atlantic Coast Conference from VT, and the team reached a top-50 national team ranking, while developing other players who reached national rankings in doubles and singles as well.

During his time at Virginia Tech, the Hokie players were not only successful on the courts, but in the classroom as well as the women's tennis team carried the highest GPA among the University's sports programs. Gomez said he has aspirations of achieving the same type of success at LA Tech.

"As part of our move to Conference USA next year, we will strive to win the conference each year and make consistent appearances at the national tournament," said Gomez. "Our goal is to give Louisiana Tech tennis significant national recognition and be the top Division I team in the state, including academically.

"I believe that success is a developed habit, and that's the philosophy I would like to pass on to my players. Our tennis program at Louisiana Tech will be built on strong principles and values shared by our athletic department, coaching staff and players. In addition, we want to motivate student-athletes to reach superior heights and cultivate team camaraderie, hard-work and pride in a winning spirit while fostering an environment of fun."

Prior to joining Virginia Tech's coaching staff, Gomez was a staff coach for three years at the Evert Tennis Academy in Boca Raton, Fla. where he developed junior players into top national USTA and international ITF rankings while also assisting with WTA players within the professional ranks.

During the summers, he coordinated and promoted tennis camps as an assistant tennis pro at Cliff Drysdale Tennis in Southampton, N.Y. where they specialize in tennis program development and daily tennis operations.

Gomez also had brief stints as an assistant tennis director at the George Washington University Tennis Center, as a tennis pro staffer at Green Spring Racquet Club in Baltimore, Md. and as an assistant men's tennis coach at Illinois State University in 2006.

As a former player and student-athlete at the University of Toledo, he has also competed at the top levels of Division I collegiate tennis and international junior competition, earning significant accomplishments on the court as well as academically.

Gomez was a varsity team captain at Toledo and team MVP for the men's tennis team, garnering multiple conference player of the week honors. He earned a bachelor's of business administration at the university in the summer of 2005 while majoring in marketing and international business.

The San Tome, Venezuela native was ranked No. 1 in the 16-18-year-old category in his country and was ranked as high as No. 312 on the International Tennis Federation junior circuit.

Gomez is also USPTA Certified and fluent in Spanish. He and his wife have two Dachshund dogs, Bruno and Brees, named after New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.
