Former Mount Carmel Academy Cubs' volleyball coach Jay Jay Juan will take over the responsibilities of assistant coach for the Lady Techster volleyball program.
"We're happy to have Jay Jay here," Tech head coach Heather Mazeitis said. "He should be a great addition to our program."
Juan finished his career at Mount Carmel with three state championships and 311 victories, most recently to the Division I state title in 2006 after leading the Cubs to a record of 28-7.
"I'm very excited about the opportunity that I have been given by Coach Mazeitis," Juan said. "This is a up and coming ball club, and I know the players have been working very hard during the spring season, and I can't wait till the season starts."
Juan became the Cubs' head coach in 1996, during the time the school made a run of 10 consecutive state final appearances from 1993 to 2002. Juan brought home two state titles to Mt. Carmel in 1999 and 2000. Juan stayed on with the Cubs until 2005 when Hurricane Katrina ravaged most of the New Orleans area, forcing Juan and his wife to relocate to Baton Rouge at Dunham High School.
As an assistant, he helped lead the Lady Tigers to the 2005 title. In 2006, Juan returned to his head coaching duties at Mt. Carmel and finished the season with the state title. During the 2006 campaign, Juan tallied his 300th career win as a head coach.
Juan left Mt. Carmel to be with his wife, Dr. Vernilyn Juan, who relocated to Monroe after the 2006 season. Juan earned his bachelor's from Tulane in 1993.
