Volleyball Roars Past Lions, 3-0
Aug. 27, 2010
JONESBORO, Ark. - Taylor Fritz recorded a match-high nine kills and 10 digs to lead Louisiana Tech to an overpowering 3-0 (25-15, 25-13, 25-19) sweep of Arkansas - Pine Bluff at the Arkansas State Invitational on Friday night.
The Lady Techsters utilized a balanced attack that was ultimately too much for the Lady Lions to handle. Tech controlled the defense holding UAPB to a .068 hitting efficiency while countering with a .224 mark (32-13-85).
The offense, anchored by Fritz, featured an evenhanded attack that saw multiple kills by seven Techsters, including 4-plus kills by Clara Vido, Jennifer Goodwin, Gabryel Ording and Caitlin Germany. Mallory Stanley and Bianca Bin contributed with double-digit assist totals with Stanley leading the charge with a match-high 15 - three shy of the UAPB team total.
Despite surrendering the first four points in the opening set, Louisiana Tech (1-1) capitalized off of a bad set by Annika Spitz to force a side out that would see Goodwin convert back-to-back kills to jumpstart a 5-0 run. From that point on, Tech would dominate play with a suffocating defensive effort in addition to compiling 10 kills and a .321 hitting efficiency to cap off a 25-15 set win.
The second set was more of the same as Tech reeled off a series of mini runs finished off by a service ace from junior, Kaylon Alexander.
Trailing by two sets, UAPB showed some life by taking an early 3-1 lead in the third set. However, after trading points to knot the score at 10 apiece, Tech would go on a 15-9 run that was highlighted by Fritz's ninth kill of the night that would also close out the match.
The Lady Techsters will be back in action tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. in the Arkansas State Invitational against host school, Arkansas State.
Notes: Tech improves to 3-0 all-time against UAPB... Tech has won all nine sets in the series... Caitlin Germany and Mallory Stanley saw their first action of the season...Taylor Fritz's (9 kills - 10 digs) was one kill short of her fifth career double-double...
