RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech opened the 2013 season with a straight sets victory over I-20 foe Grambling State Friday afternoon in the team's first match of UTA Hilton Invitational at College Park Center in Arlington.
LA Tech (1-0) defeated the Grambling State Lady Tigers (0-1) by a score of 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-9) in the first match of this weekend's tournament.
We did what we were supposed to do to get a win today," de Souza said. "I am glad the team was able to face different competition today than ourselves."
The Lady Techsters were led by junior outside hitter Rebecca Redgen, a junior college transfer who totaled a team-high nine kills with a .500 hitting percentage over the course of two sets.
As a whole, LA Tech had 38 total team kills to Grambling's 24 kills. The team also put together a .337 hitting percentage in the straight sets victory.
"During our first match today, even though we were able to win, our competition showed us that we need to work on many things to get better going forward," de Souza said. "We need to keep training, get better and become more in sync as a team. We need to use every opportunity in our next matches to become more cohesive as a team."
The Lady Techsters return to the court at 11 a.m. Saturday to face Abilene Christian in the team's second match of the weekend. LA Tech will then battle the host UT Arlington Mavericks at 7 p.m. Saturday night at College Park Center to wrap up the weekend's competition.
