HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Four Lady Techsters recorded double-digit kills en-route to a 3-1 match victory over San Houston State (4-3) Saturday inside Reed Green Coliseum. Set scores were 25-20, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-12.
After splitting the first two sets with SHSU the Techsters (6-1) took control of the match midway through the third set. With the score knotted at 18 a Kassia Pinto kill would spark an eight point run by Tech to take a 24-18 lead. The Techsters would go on to win the set 25-21 and take a 2-1 set lead.
Tech got off to a sluggish start in the final set of the match, down 7-2 forcing Tech head coach Matt Sonnichsen to use a time out to settle the team down and settle down they did as they roared back to take a 10-9 lead in the set. The Techsters would not relinquish that lead for the rest of the set and would only allow two more points and ended the match with a nine point run to take the set 25-12.
Junior Kara Jones was a force at the net all day for the Techsters as she recorded 12 kills to go along with her team high three solo blocks and four assisted blocks. Nataliya Panova once again led Tech in kills with 13 and registered her fourth double-double of the year adding 12 digs. Senior KC Clayton added 12 kills of her own and Pinto recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs.
Louisiana Tech will continue play today when they take on host team Southern Miss. (5-1) at 2:00 p.m. The winner of this final match will be named the tournament champion. Follow the action with gametracker on www.latechsports.com.
