Techster Volleyball Devours Lady Tigers for First Victory
After spouting off 16 straight points in the third set, the Louisiana Tech volleyball team stormed past Grambling State in straight sets to earn its first win of the 2012 campaign 25-13, 25-10, 25-6 in front of an energetic crowd in the Thomas Assembly Center Wednesday night.
The victory marks the first for the Lady Techsters under first-year head coach Adriano de Souza and was Tech's home opener after starting the season with six straight road matches in consecutive weekend tournaments.
"The team did a lot of the things we asked them to do tonight," de Souza said. "The team kept themselves involved in the game, communicated well and took advantage of the opportunities they had. All of these are things we talk about in practice all the time. They were able to apply them in the match we played tonight and it worked out."
Tech outhit Grambling State .544 to -.092 for the match while notching 42 kills to the Lady Tiger's 13 on its way to a victory. The win marks the 23rd all-time for the Lady Techsters as they now hold a 23-1 advantage in head-to-head matchups.
Senior middle blocker Gabryel Ording notched four kills with six attempts and a .667 hitting percentage for the match, while sophomore setter Maria Coelho continued to be a threat offensively with 30 assists and four kills of her own. Coelho recorded a perfect hitting percentage against the Lady Tigers.
The Techsters had nine players record kills against the I-20 rivals, all nine hitting above .300 individually for the match. The team also recorded 6.0 total blocks to Grambling's 1.0.
Tech will now travel to Hammond, La. to face off against four quality opponents in the Southeastern Louisiana Tournament and look to build off its first win of the season.
The Techsters will kick off the tournament Friday at 9 a.m. against UTPA before taking on Southern later that day at 3 p.m. The Techsters will then face off in another double header Saturday against Weber State at 10 a.m. before facing the host team Southeastern Louisiana at 2 p.m. to conclude the weekend.
