RUSTON, La. - The Louisiana Tech volleyball team (3-6, 0-0) received a double dose of victory in the first day of the Tangi Tourism Lion Classic in Hammond, La., as the team knocked off UTPA and Southern University to notch its third straight victory.
The Lady Techsters began the day with a win against the UTPA Broncs (25-18, 25-23, 17-25, 25-13) in a morning match in University Center on the campus of Southeastern Louisiana. The day was complete a few hours later when Tech stormed past the Jaguars, beating Southern (25-14, 25-13, 25-10) in straight sets.
"The team was focused on their tasks in both matches," head coach Adriano de Souza said. "This is what will help us to improve our performances as we move forward. Our team is starting to understand that the more they communicate, the better chance we have for good performances. They want to improve and that is our greatest strength."
The active three-match winning streak marks the longest for the Techster volleyball program in almost two years, dating back to 2010 when that team won four straight matches early in the season.
Maher recorded 11 kills against the Broncs with an added nine digs, while Coelho added 35 assists on the day. Germany was a threat both offensively and defensively for the Techsters, recording eight kills, two digs and four blocks.
Tech was led in the second match against the Jaguars once again by Germany, who had seven kills while hitting .417 in the three-set match. Senior Gabryel Ording also was a threat in the match with six kills and four assisted blocks against Southern.
