Techsters Drop Heartbreaker to SFA in Road Match

RUSTON, La. - Louisiana Tech fought back from two sets down, but eventually fell to Stephen F. Austin 2-3 (20-25, 20-25, 25-18, 25-22, 12-15) in a valiant effort put together by the Lady Techsters at Shelton Gym in Nacogdoches, Texas.
LA Tech (4-4) dropped the opening two sets 25-20 before mounting a comeback to tie the match at 2-2 and force a decisive fifth set.
Stephen F. Austin (6-2) eventually topped the Lady Techsters by three points in the final set in the Ladyjacks' 2013 home opener.
"I am very proud of the effort of the team and what we achieved in the match tonight," head coach Adriano de Souza. "We made some adjustments that we talked about in the last two practices and the players did really well putting those adjustments into this match. We knew the competition would be strong tonight and we are returning home confident of the progress we made tonight."
Despite the loss, it was a career night for several Lady Techsters.
Junior outside hitter Xzache Mathis, who totaled 28 kills versus the Ladyjacks tonight, is now tied for fourth all-time in the program's history for kills in a single match.
Junior setter Maria Coelho recorded a career-high 58 assists in the five-set match versus Stephen F. Austin.
Over the course of five sets, the Lady Techsters out-performed Stephen F. Austin in almost every statistical category, including total kills, hitting percentage, assists, blocks and points.
LA Tech will now enter tournament play at the Tangi Tourism Lion Classic on the campus of Southeastern La. Tech will open the tournament at 11 a.m. Friday versus Nebraska-Omaha in Hammond, La.
