RUSTON, La. - Despite pushing the UT Arlington Mavericks to four sets, the Louisiana Tech volleyball team (3-10, 0-1 WAC) fell to UT Arlington Saturday afternoon three sets to one in the Thomas Assembly Center in the opening match of WAC play.
The Mavericks (5-8, 1-0 WAC) took the first two sets before dropping the third to a fiery Techster squad. UT Arlington eventually closed out fourth set to take the match 25-16, 25-14, 18-25, 25-14.
The Techsters were outhit in the match .287 to .173 by the visiting Mavericks and had 49 kills to UT Arlington's 59.
"It was nice to play the first match of conference at home," head coach Adriano de Souza said. "It is time to evaluate what we did today and fix some things to do better next week. The third set was good for us because we competed with more tenacity and were scrappy on the floor."
Junior Clara Vido and Freshman Fenix Calderon recorded double-doubles during the afternoon matchup. Vido had 15 kills and added 22 digs, while Calderon recorded 13 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore setter Maria Coelho continued to be a threat offensively by notching all of the team's 42 totals assists for the conference match.
The Techsters return to action at 8 p.m., Sept. 20 as they travel to face off against New Mexico State in the team's first conference road match of the campaign.
