Lousiana Tech Goes 2-1 In Husky Classic

HOUSTON, Texas – Louisiana Tech (8-7; 0-0 WAC) defeated Houston Baptist, 3-2 (25-20; 25-21; 17-25; 19-25; 15-9) Saturday afternoon in the final game of the Husky Classic in Houston, Texas at Sharp Gym. The Lady Techsters finished the tournament, 2-1.

“I am so proud of my volleyball team this weekend,” said head coach Matt Sonnichsen. “It would have been easy for a young team to fold after how Southern Miss just whacked us, but to bounce back and finish with two wins was great.”

Clara Vido led all Lady Techsters, recording her eighth double-double of the season with 20 kills and 19 digs. Vido was also named to the Husky Classic all-Tournament Team finishing the tournament with an exceptional 42 kills and 42 digs over the course of three games.

“I think we did a really good job on not committing errors and keeping the ball in play,” said Vido. “I think after the match against Texas Tech my personal goal was to help this team and not make errors. I just tried and learn from my mistakes and doing that was on my mind in this tournament.”

Emily Maher also had an outstanding performance against Houston Baptist, recording 13 kills, four blocks and a service ace for the Techsters. Maher finished the tournament with 13 kills, six blocks and a service ace.

“I want to point out the play of our opposite players in Emily (Maher) and Anne Marie (Taylor),” said Sonnichsen. “I have been alternating them in matches because they each bring different strength’s to the floor.”

While Taylor did not see action against the Huskies of Houston Baptist, she recorded a combined five kills over the course of tournament.

Caitlin Germany also had a stellar performance over the course of the tournament. The sophomore middle blocker recorded eight kills and five blocks against Houston Baptist. She finished the tournament with 24 kills and seven blocks.


 

 

The Lady Techsters went ahead early in the match, taking a 2-0 lead before falling to the Huskies in the third and fourth set. The Lady Techsters battled back in the fifth set, however, recording seven kills and two blocks to close out the victory.  The Lady Techsters finished the match with 11 blocks and a .139-.089 hitting advantage over Houston Baptist.

Louisiana Tech continues their road trip next weekend when they travel to Las Cruces, N.M. to face New Mexico State in their conference opener on Sept. 24 at 8 p.m.
