DePaul Match Recap
In the first match of the day, Tech came out swinging early and often. Midway through the first set, Tech gained a slight 15-14 edge fueled by three kills and four digs from Monne. The Techsters would eventually take the first set, 25-21, after outhitting the Blue Demons .275 to .152 in the frame.
DePaul would surge back in the second set, however, building a four-point lead late, and carrying that into a 25-19 victory.
The Techsters would not be deterred and were propelled by a pair of separate 3-0 runs early in the third set to stake out a 14-7 lead. A furious DePaul rally made things interesting at the end of the set, but Tech would hold on for the 25-23 win after Monne's 12th kill of the match punctuated the attack.
Trailing 2-1, it was DePaul's turn to go on the offensive, as the Blue Demons surged out ahead to a 17-14 lead in the fourth set. Tech could never get within two for the rest of the frame, and DePaul would take set number four, 24-21, forcing a winner-take-all fifth and final set.
In Tech's fourth five-set match this season, the squad built an early 4-2 lead in the race to 15. However, the match of runs continued to ebb and flow, as a 4-0 run from DePaul saw Tech fall behind 11-8. Tech then surged ahead 13-12, but DePaul would end the set and the match, claiming a 17-15 triumph.
Tech saw three players contribute 10+ kills as Monne (18) Carter Mirich (13) and Madeline Davis (10) all stepped up nicely to lead the offense. Brooke Short distributed the ball nicely, racking up a season-high 51 assists, while Davis proved to be a serious threat behind the service line, registering a season-best five aces.
Saint Louis Recap
In the final match of the invitational, the Techsters showed early on that the effects of their earlier loss were not going to discourage them. In the first set, Tech silenced the home crowd quickly by jumping out to a 16-8 lead. That cushion would be enough, as Tech would outhit the Billikens, .233 to .226 in the frame, leading to a 25-23 victory.
The second set was a much different story, however, as Saint Louis put together one of the more impressive runs of the tournament, and in the blink of an eye, owned a 10-1 advantage. The defecit was too much to overcome for the Lady Techsters, who fell 25-12 in the second frame.
Saint Louis would use the momentum built by the dominant second-set to take sets three and four, along with the match.
Davis, Emily Boylan and Gina Cortesi played strong at the net, combining for eight blocks, while Monne's 15 kills led all players.
Tech will return to action this Wednesday, taking on in-state foe Louisiana-Monroe in the final match before the conference season begins Sunday against Rice. Live stats can always be found in the schedule section on the LA Tech Sports Volleyball Page.
