RUSTON - A hot hitting New Mexico State team's .313 hitting percentage led to a 3-1 victory over Louisiana Tech (11-7, 1-1 WAC) Sunday afternoon in the Thomas Assembly Center. Set scores were 19-25, 25-22, 25-14 and 25-21.
The Techsters got off to a quick start winning the first set in convincing fashion. Tech jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first set and did not let up as the closest New Mexico State (7-4, 2-0 WAC) would get would be 22-18 before the Techsters finally took the set 25-19. Kassia Pinto recorded seven of 13 kills in the set to lead Tech.
The Aggies answered back in set two building an 8-1 lead of their own to open the set. However, the Techsters would not be discouraged as the team battled back with a 7-0 run to tie the set at eight. Tech would hang around for the rest of the set, but were never able to gain a lead over the Aggies and would drop the set 25-22.
Louisiana Tech seemed to be out of sync for the entire third set as New Mexico State inched further and further in front of the Techsters, leading by as much as 20-10 before finishing off Tech 25-14 in the set.
In a hard fought fourth set, the Techsters just did not have enough in the tank. With the score tied at 21 the Aggies would go on a 4-0 run to win the set 25-21 and the match.
Louisiana Tech was led by outside hitter Kassia Pinto with 13 kills and nine digs on the day while libero Lori Hunsucker led Tech with 10 digs. This is the ninth straight match Hunsucker has recorded double-digit digs.
Leading New Mexico State on the day was Whitney Woods who recorded 22 kills on 33 attempts for a remarkable .576 hitting percentage. As a team the Aggies recorded an impressive .313 hitting percentage against a Tech team that was leading the conference in opponent hitting percentage, holding their opponents to a .139 percentage on the season.
