Final Stats

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Louisiana Tech women’s volleyball team battled, but fell 3-2 (25-27, 25-23, 25-6, 17-25, 15-8) to the host Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders Friday evening from Alumni Memorial Gym.

Tech (5-13, 0-4 C-USA) faced a 2-1 deficit heading into the fourth, and put together a nice rally to win the frame. The fourth set was all square at 11, before Tech came alive, clicking on both offense and defense, and took 14 of the final 20 points to win the set 25-17, and advance the match to a fifth and final frame.

In the fifth, Middle Tennessee (5-14, 1-4) jumped out to a 10-2 lead and never looked back, taking the decisive fifth set 15-8.

Marta Monne and Gina Cortesi shone offensively for Tech, as the outside hitters combined for 23 kills on the evening. Cortesi also led the squad in blocks with six, her second-highest mark of the season. Sophomore Madeline Davis chipped in nine kills with five blocks.

Freshman Emily Boylan was pressed into action in her first start of the year and performed admirably, contributing a pair of kills, a dig and four blocks (tying a career-high).

Middle Tennessee was led by Dora Peonia who registered a career-high 19 kills, nine service aces and nine digs.

In the first set, Tech looked poised for a big match, rushing out to an early 7-2 edge in front of a hostile Blue Raider crowd. A subsequent 4-0 run in the frame pushed the lead to 14-6. Monne and Cortesi started off hot, registering five combined kills and hitting .625 midway through the first. A late Middle Tennessee rally tied things up at 22, but Tech remained poised and nabbed the early 1-0 advantage with a 27-25 triumph.

In the second set, Tech started off similarly to the first, controlling the frame early on en route to a 7-4 edge. However, as the two teams went back and forth up to the final stages of the set, Middle Tennessee surged ahead and evened the match with a 25-23 win. Cortesi powered the Tech offense in the set, notching a team-high five kills on just seven attempts (.571).

The third set was forgettable for the Techsters after Middle Tennessee took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-6 victory, courtesy of an 11-1 run to begin the frame.

The Lady Techsters will return home on Sunday afternoon, squaring off with UAB at 1 p.m. from the Thomas Assembly Center. The Techsters are 2-2 from the friendly confines of the TAC this season, and will be looking for C-USA win number one on the season.
