GREENVILLE, N.C. - After trading sets back and forth, Louisiana Tech lost in heartbreaking fashion in five sets to the Pirates of East Carolina on the road, 3-2 (25-23, 16-25, 25-23, 9-25, 19-17), Friday night at Williams Arena at Minges Coliseum in Greenville.
Despite winning the first set and then holding a 2-1 lead over East Carolina (10-11, 1-3 C-USA), LA Tech (7-13, 1-4 C-USA) failed to hold on late in the match as the Pirates fought back from behind for their first Conference USA victory of the season.
Tonight's match marks the seventh five-set match the Lady Techsters have played this season as the team now holds a 2-5 record when going the distance in 2013. LA Tech is now 1-6 in road matches thus far this season.
Xzache Mathis led LA Tech with 18 kills in the loss and also totaled 10 digs for her fourth double-double of the season, while Rebecca Redgen had 11 kills with a total of four blocks at the net. Senior Caitlin Germany also totaled seven kills and five blocks for the Techsters.
Maria Coelho led with 41 assists, while freshman libero Alejandra Aviles recorded a season-high 26 digs in the match. Coelho also had 14 digs for her fifth double-double of the campaign. Sophomore Dalane Guidry led LA Tech at the net with six total blocks versus the Pirates.
As a team, Louisiana Tech totaled 48 kills and hit just .036 for the match compared to East Carolina's .134 attacking percentage. The Lady Techsters out-blocked ECU Friday night with a total of 11 blocks to the Pirates' 10.5.
Louisiana Tech returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18 as the Lady Techsters get a week off before they play hosts to Middle Tennessee in a Conference USA match that will be played in Memorial Gym on Tech's campus.
