RUSTON, LA. – With their backs against the wall, the Louisiana Tech women’s volleyball team rallied to erase a 2-0 deficit, forcing a decisive fifth set. However, FIU would emerge victorious, 3-2 (25-19, 26-24, 27-29, 20-25, 16-14) Sunday afternoon from the Thomas Assembly Center.
After dropping a tightly contested second set, Tech (6-17, 1-8 C-USA) stood up to the adverse conditions and came together for impressive wins in sets three and four.
In the third frame, the Panthers (3-13, 2-7 C-USA) seemed to have the edge throughout and looked to be well on their way to capturing a Sunday sweep. However, trailing 23-20, the Techsters would lay claim to nine of the final 13 points while fighting off three match points for a 29-27 triumph.
Winning that contested third set provided life for both the Lady Techsters and the Thomas Assembly Center crowd, as the momentum seemed to turn.
Trailing 2-1 in the fourth set, Tech’s defense stepped up in a big way, limiting the Panther offense to its lowest hitting percentage of the afternoon (.103). A thunderous kill from rookie Carter Mirich pushed the Tech lead to 20-18 and forced an FIU timeout. The Techsters would not look back en route to a 25-20 fourth set win, evening the contest up at two.
With the match on the line in the fifth and final set, neither team led by more than three points, but an FIU block and a final Lady Techster attack error, closed the book on the valiant comeback effort.
With the long, tightly contested match came some impressive record-breaking performances. Senior setter Brooke Short notched a new career-high with 62 assists, while freshman Carter Mirich set a new personal best with 21 kills.
Senior leader Marta Monne’s 25 kills were a team season-best and were also the most in the Milan, Italy, native’s storied LA Tech career.
Tech also saw four players with 10+ kills for the first time this season.
The Lady Techsters will be back in action next week, visiting the Lone Star state for a pair of weekend showdowns with UTSA and UTEP.
