Volleyball Announces 2018 Schedule

June 20, 2018

RUSTON, La. – With the 2018 season just over two months away, Louisiana Tech volleyball head coach Adriano de Souza announced the team’s 2018 schedule on Wednesday, consisting of four non-conference tournaments, and nine home matches over the squad’s 29-match slate.

With a young roster comprised of 12 underclassmen, Tech will be tasked with coming together and building chemistry early on away from home.

The Lady Techsters will open the season away from home with three consecutive road tournaments. The team will begin the season in Houston, Texas, taking on host Houston Baptist (21-10 in 2017) and UTRGV (17-12 in 2017) in the HBU Tournament, running Aug. 24-25.

“Our schedule will give us the opportunity to play against teams that will test us in a wide range of game styles and competitiveness,” head coach Adriano de Souza said. “The goal of our staff is that our players take these opportunities to grow and mature quickly, because this year we will have the youngest squad since 2012. In the four weekends of competition prior to the start of Conference USA our players will face the urgent need of learning about each other and learning to compete together as a team, overcoming youth will be their toughest task this year.”

Then, Tech will head far north to Grand Forks, North Dakota, for the UND Classic on Aug. 31-Sep. 1. The Techsters will play Eastern Washington (7-18 in 2017), host North Dakota (30-8 in 2017, and a 2017 NCAA Tournament participant) and Western Carolina (11-19 in 2017) in the round robin style tournament. Last season, Tech battled a tough North Dakota squad in four sets at the Rebel Invitational.

Following up on the North Dakota trip, the Lady Techsters will remain on the road for the third consecutive weekend, heading to Mobile, Alabama, for the South Alabama Tournament, wherein Tech will take on the likes of SEC foe Mississippi State (10-23 in 2017), Southeastern Louisiana and the host Jaguars (17-10 in 2017) from Sept. 7-8.

On September 11, at 7 p.m., Tech will open its home slate, hosting Jackson State for a Tuesday night showdown.

Following their home-opener, the Lady Techsters hit the road for one final non-conference tournament, squaring off with Northern Kentucky (Sept. 14), Oral Roberts (Sept. 14) and the host SIUE Cougars (25-7 in 2017) to round out action on Sept. 15.

The Conference USA regular season gets going the weekend of Sept. 21 with Tech hosting North Texas that Friday, and then welcoming Middle Tennessee on Sunday the 23rd. Tech will then play two more home matches (vs. ULM on Sept. 25, and vs. Marshall on Sept. 30) before opening playing seven of their next nine conference matches away from home. The Lady Techsters will round out conference action with their final three regular season matches all from the friendly confines of the Thomas Assembly Center (UTSA on Nov. 2, Southern Miss on Nov. 8 and WKU on Nov. 10). The league’s conference tournament begins on Nov. 16 in Huntington, West Virginia.

Head coach Adriano de Souza will look to for some leadership from his upper classmen to help guide this young squad through a competitive league schedule.

“I believe our team’s strength will increase with a higher participation in the game by juniors Jayde Penn, Kaitlyn Adams and Morgan Currie”, de Souza noted. “Jayde has been in the program for two years, while Kaitlyn and Morgan are two junior college transfers. It is the leadership of our junior class and their ability to include the newcomers that can help in the development of our program this year.

“Among our seven returners, junior Madeline Davis brings back the most exposure to conference competition (two seasons as a starter) and we will count on her as one of our captains to set a strong competitive tone to our team. Last season, sophomores Carter Mirich and Marie Helene Verlinden saw quality time against conference opponents, and both will continue to be key in the development of our team this season.”
