Volleyball Opens Practice on Saturday
RUSTON, La. - Armed with five returning starters and eight letter winners back from 2002, the Louisiana Tech volleyball team will begin practice on Saturday morning.
The Lady Techsters are coming off a 19-16 season but are expecting even bigger things this year.
“The first thing we need to accomplish in the next three weeks is to get everyone in physical condition and then decide who our starting lineup will be,” Tech head coach Heather Mazeitis said.
Despite having five starters returning, there are several talented newcomers that could end up in the Lady Techster starting lineup.
“We have five starters back but in quite a few places the competition is wide open. We had a real good recruiting class and some of them will be competing for court time,” Mazeitis said. “ The biggest thing to decide is who our starters are and find that out as fast as possible to get the team used to playing with each other.”
Among the top returnees for Tech are junior setter Lia Mora and senior outside hitter Cristine Sant’Anna, both Second-Team All-Western Athletic Conference selections last year.
Mora was also tabbed to the preseason All-WAC team by the league’s coaches, the only setter named to the 12-member squad.
The expectations of everyone in the program have changed after the 19-16 campaign a year ago, which tied Tech for the 7th biggest turnaround in college volleyball. Tech enters preseason drills with 14 members of the team.
“This is our largest squad which is great and everything is different from my first two years here,” Mazeitis said. “The girls and the pride they have in this program is totally different and the sky is the limit and they really believe that.”
The season begins on August 29th when Tech takes on Alcorn State at the UL-Lafayette Tournament. The first home match is September 23rd against North Texas.
