RUSTON, La.-The Louisiana Tech volleyball team started their first full day of preseason practice Thursday morning in the Thomas Assembly Center as the 2011 campaign officially got underway.
With 10 newcomers, the primary focus this preseason will be integrating the new talent into the fast pace realm of NCAA volleyball. The team will practice in two sessions, morning and afternoon. The morning practices focus on the team as a unit while in the afternoon the team focuses on positional drills.
"I don't want to go too hard too fast. I want to slowly get us in shape and get everybody comfortable," said head coach Matt Sonnichsen. "With 10 new kids it can sometimes be a little intimidating. They can get a little overwhelmed so we're going maybe a little bit slower this year than we will next year."
Along with the influx of youth to this year's roster, the team returns a number of players that were plagued by injury last season.
"We're going to have some athletes that didn't get on the court last year or were on the court just briefly and their veteran leaders," said Sonnichsen. "I think after what they've been through they are really going to savor their ability to be on the court."
The Lady Techster roster will see a tremendous amount of depth heading into conference play as their injuries rehabilitate. This is a benefit that senior standout Bianca Bin feels will lead her team to post-season play.
"I'm very excited because we have a lot of new kids and they are all awesome. It is the first day of practice and we're already good," said Bin. "I think we're going to do great. We're definitely going to go to the conference tournament this year."
Tech will continue their preseason camp over the next 14 days before opening season play Friday, August 26th against UT-Pan American in the Sam Houston Invitational.
