Volleyball Opens Fall Camp with 2016 Season on the Horizon

Aug. 11, 2016

RUSTON, La. - In the four days since reporting for fall camp last Sunday, the grind on the volleyball court has been relentless for the Lady Techsters.

On Sunday afternoon the Louisiana Tech volleyball program gathered together in the Thomas Assembly Center for a team meeting, signaling the opening of the 2016 campaign, where the Lady Techsters are looking to increase their win total for the fourth consecutive season.

"There first three days have given us the ability to see where our returners stand, coming back from the offseason," head coach Adriano de Souza said. "They have worked tirelessly to help our incoming players adjust to the collegiate level."

Three seniors, Alejandra Aviles, Angela Papach and Hannah Wright, enter their final season with the Lady Techsters and will be the leading voice for a young Techster squad both on and off the court.

The message from the senior class been simple, develop a winning attitude.

"We need to think like winners and we have to be confident," said senior Alejandra Aviles. "We have to believe in ourselves."

With that goal in mind, the Lady Techsters returned to the Thomas Assembly Center on Tuesday morning for their first team-practice of the season. Five new faces join the Lady Techsters from last year's squad and enter their first fall camp with the program.

"There are a lot of adjustments to make when you transition to the Division I level," de Souza said. "One of the biggest adjustments is learning to self-motivate around the clock. We want them to put their best foot forward every time they step on the floor, so they can continue to improve and reach the level of performance we need to be successful."

Freshman Jayde Penn, who hails from Frisco, Texas, continues to make strides as she adjusts to a faster pace in the collegiate game.

"So far the adjustment to the Division I level has gone great," Penn said. "The game is a lot faster than anything I have ever experienced before, but I am getting acclimated to the pace. I have to be both mentally and physically prepared as we get ready to enter the season."

The Lady Techsters open the 2016 campaign with a two-day tournament on August 26-27 at the Redhawks Invitational in Cape Girardeau, Missouri.
