RUSTON, La. - After three weeks of careful planning and preparation, the new-look Lady Techster volleyball team is headed to Hattiesburg, Miss., to compete in its first tournament of the 2012 season.
Tech will compete against the likes of Central Arkansas, South Alabama and the host school, Southern Miss in the season-opening Southern Miss Invitational Friday and Saturday.
The Techsters will kick start the much-anticipated campaign with a 3 p.m., match Friday against the Sugar Bears of Central Arkansas at Reed Green Coliseum.
With first year head coach Adriano de Souza at the helm of the program, the Lady Techsters are looking to improve on last year's 10-22 mark, starting with the weekend invitational in Mississippi.
"The first weekend of competition is important for every team, everyone out there wants finish the weekend with a positive record," de Souza said. "Our student-athletes have been playing against each other for several days and we need a reality check. We need to compete against other teams and see different things than what we see every day in the gym, and this will help us immensely."
"I know our players will push themselves to learn more about what we can and cannot do during the weekend, and we will return home more experienced if they are aware of their surroundings during these three matches," de Souza said.
Tech will play Central Arkansas at 3 p.m., Friday before facing off against South Alabama and Southern Miss Saturday at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively.
