Game Notes

RUSTON, La. - The Louisiana Tech volleyball team started preseason training exactly three weeks ago, but the team is now ready to face a different opponent opposite the net by traveling over 900 miles to battle three teams in the 2014 season-opening Bronco Classic in Kalamazoo, Mich., on Friday.

The Lady Techsters are scheduled to compete against Oakland (9 a.m. CT) and Saint Francis (3:30 p.m. CT) on Friday before taking on the host Broncos in the team's final match of the weekend at 9 a.m. CT on Saturday in University Arena.

"Our team is looking forward to this first tournament," head coach Adriano de Souza said. "The competition will be strong and a good test for our team. Our players are eager to compete against different teams than what they see in practice every day. This first tournament will be an opportunity for all of our players and staff to see where we are in preparation for Conference USA matches. Our goal is to focus on one match at a time and put all of our efforts into what we can control."

This season, LA Tech returns eight letterwinners (three starters and a libero), while six newcomers are expected to make an immediate impact for de Souza and his coaching staff, which includes the addition of first-year assistant Dustin Sahlmann.

LA Tech is returning the favor by traveling to Kalamazoo after facing off against the Broncos last season when Western Michigan, a team that posted a 17-14 record last season, traveled to Ruston to appear in the LA Tech Invitational. In that meeting, Western Michigan edged the Lady Techsters, 3-1, in the Thomas Assembly Center.

The first two matches of the weekend against Oakland and Saint Francis will mark the first meetings in the series history of the teams.

One year ago, the Oakland Golden Grizzlies posted a 15-15 record with a 9-5 mark in The Horizon League. In the afternoon match on Friday, the Lady Techsters will face a Saint Francis team that went 5-22 last season, including a 5-9 record in the Northeast Conference. Additionally, the Red Flash volleyball squad is under the direction of first-year head coach Jason Kozak.
