Volleyball to Begin Tournament Play on Friday at Texas State
SAN MARCOS, Texas - The Louisiana Tech volleyball team will put its unbeaten record on the line when the Lady Techsters compete in the Texas State Tournament (formerly Southwest Texas State) beginning on Friday.
Tech (3-0) swept through the UL-Lafayette Tournament last weekend while claiming the tournament title. Right side hitter Cristine Sant'Anna and setter Lia Mora earned all-tournament team honors with Sant'Anna being named the most outstanding player at the event.
"It was good to start out on a high note by winning the UL-Lafayette tournament last weekend," Tech head coach Heather Mazeitis said. "We will have to step it up a notch this week with the quality teams that we will play this week."
The competition will be much tougher this week with Tech scheduled to take on 2002 NCAA Tournament qualifiers Florida State and Wisconsin in addition to facing Texas State and Sun Belt power Arkansas State.
The Badgers are ranked No. 24 in the AVCA top-25 poll this week.
"Wisconsin is traditional power and usually among the top teams in the country," Mazeitis added. "That match will give us a good measure of where we are and where we need to be before the WAC schedule starts at the end of the month."
In last week's tournament title, Tech defeated Alcorn State, UL-Monroe and UL-Lafayette all in three game sweeps. The sweep over the Cajuns was the first time they had been swept at home since the 1998 season.
The 3-0 start is the first time Tech has begun a season with three straight wins since the 1990 campaign. The Lady Techsters have never started a season 4-0 as the volleyball program enters its 17th year of existence.
Tech will face Florida State on Friday at noon before taking on Texas State at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
On Saturday, Tech takes on Wisconsin at noon and closes action with a matchup against Arkansas State at 7:30 p.m.
