RUSTON, La. - The Louisiana Tech Volleyball team is set to welcome three teams to Ruston for the Louisiana Tech Fairfield Volleyball Invitational with a total of six matches scheduled for Friday and Saturday in the Thomas Assembly Center.
The tournament will commence with a 10 a.m. match featuring Western Michigan (2-1) and New Orleans (0-4), while LA Tech (2-2) will begin tournament play approximately at 12 p.m. following the conclusion of that match. The Lady Techsters will face off against the Cowgirls of McNeese State (3-1) to begin this weekend's competition.
McNeese State will then battle UNO Friday evening at 5 p.m. before LA Tech takes on Western Michigan in the final match of the day at 7 p.m.
The tournament will come to an end Saturday with two matches scheduled at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. McNeese State will battle Western Michigan in the first match Saturday before Tech takes on UNO to end a weekend full of competition.
"This is tough competition," head coach Adriano de Souza said. "The three teams that will come here to play with us want to win. They want to be successful. It is the beginning of the season. Everyone wants to grab a win. The three matches are going to be very important for us and very tough. We hope to learn inside those games and be successful in as many matches as we can."
The Lady Techsters are coming off a 3-0 straight-sets win over UAPB in the 2013 home opener. Junior outside hitter Rebecca Redgen, who represented LA Tech on the all-tour¬nament team last weekend in Arlington, leads the Lady Techsters with 46 kills and 3.29 kills per set in four matches. Redgen has totaled double-digits in kills in three of the four matches the Lady Techsters have played this season.
Junior college transfer Jessie Ely and freshman Alejandra Aviles have both seen time at the libero position in 2013. Ely currently leads the team in digs (35) service aces with nine, while Aviles is second with five aces and an average of 0.56 per set.
