Volleyball Opens Home Slate with Lady Techster Invitational

Sept. 7, 2017

RUSTON, La. - After opening the 2017 season with three weeks on the road, the Louisiana Tech women's volleyball team will return home to kick off its home schedule with the Lady Techster Invitational, running Sep. 8-9.

Lady Techster Invitational Notes
Tournament Central

Tech (1-5) welcomes Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-6), Memphis (2-4) and Sam Houston State (1-6) to the Thomas Assembly Center for the weekend round-robin style tournament. All three of Tech’s matches will be streamed live on CUSA.tv (subscription required) and live stats links can be found on the LA Tech Tournament Central page.

With the first opportunity to play in front of their home fans, the Lady Techsters will be looking to turn the corner on a season that has early on been defined by razor-thin defeats. Of Tech's six matches in 2017, half have gone the distance to five sets.

Helping build consistency throughout the season has been senior leader Jacie McClure. The Baton Rouge, Louisiana, native leads the team with 100 digs early on, and her 4.00 digs per set average is fourth best among Conference USA leaders. McClure enters the weekend, just three digs shy of tying former Lady Techster Ambra Hayes for seventh all-time in LA Tech history.

Offensively for the Techsters, another senior leader in Marta Monne and an up-and-coming youngster in Gina Cortesi have taken the reigns of head coach Adriano de Souza's offense, and have been rock solid throughout the team's first six contests.

Cortesi leads the squad in kills and points with 76 and 88.0, respectively. Her impressive 21 kill-10 dig effort against UT Martin last week, helped Tech push UT Martin to five sets. Monne has been strong both offensively and defensively, accumulating 69 kills along with 82 digs. The senior set a career-high in Tech's season-opener against Ole Miss, racking up 20 digs in that contest.

Tech has also shown strong signs of improvement above the net. Madeline Davis paces a unit that ranks fifth in C-USA in blocks per set, averaging 2.16 on the season. Davis, herself, averages a team-high 1.16 blocks per set, and ranks seventh among all league leaders.

Scouting the Opposition
All-time, Tech is undefeated against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (6-0), owns a 4-8 record against Sam Houston State and has gone 2-4 in six meetings against Memphis.

The Lady Lions are currently on a three-match losing skid, dropping all three at the Redhawk Invitational last weekend.

Memphis heads out on the road for the third-straight weekend (first time since 1991), after taking two of three at the UCA Invitational last weekend. This will be the first ever trip to Ruston for the Tigers volleyball program.

Hannah Flowers leads the way offensively for the Tigers, with 66 kills (3.00/set) while Alyssa Kronberg has paced the team with 110 digs (third-most among AAC leaders).

Sam Houston State was dealt a 5-set loss in its home opener to Texas State on Tuesday. The Bearkats’ lone win of the season came against UL-Monroe at the Chattanooga Classic.

Admission is free to all matches this weekend, which feature opening weekend promotions. For Tech’s first match on Friday at noon, there will be free pizza for the first 200 students to the TAC.
