Tech Falls to Sam Houston State in Weekend Finale

Sept. 9, 2017

RUSTON, La. - The Louisiana Tech women's volleyball team wrapped up the Lady Techster Invitational with a tough 3-0 (17-25, 15-25, 16-25) defeat to the tournament champion Sam Houston Bearkats Saturday afternoon at the Thomas Assembly Center.

Box Score

Tech (3-6) finished the weekend with a 2-1 record, with wins coming against Memphis and Arkansas-Pine Bluff, while seeing senior Marta Monne and Maddy Davis earn all-tournament recognition for their impressive performances. Tech's sets-won average throughout the weekend was second-best, only to the Bearkats.

"Overall, I think this was a weekend that taught us a lot about what we need to do and what we need to develop the rest of this season," head coach Adriano de Souza said. "We definitely wanted to finish the tournament with a win, but we will take a lot of learning material from this last match. We have a very good group that works hard and I know their frustration will soon be turned into motivation."

Tech opened the finale against Sam Houston with good energy, trading points throughout the first half of the first frame. However, a quick run that saw the Berakats score seven of the next nine points put Sam Houston State ahead 17-11. Tech was forced to call a timeout, but tournament MVP Brooke White ended the first set with a flurry of kills to claim the frame 25-17.

In the second, Tech was held to just a .065 hitting percentage, while the Bearkats struck at a .312 clip, winning the set 25-15.

In the third frame, Tech showed some bounce back and jumped out to an early 7-4 lead, paced by a couple blocks from Davis and Marie-Helene Verlinden. Tech would maintain its lead up until 10-9, but Sam Houston poured on another run to take an 18-11 advantage. The Bearkats hit their highest percentage of the tournament in the third frame (.370) and staked a 25-16 win to close out the match.

Balance to the lineup was key for the Techsters throughout the whole invitational, as Gina Cortesi (25 kills), Carter Mirich (22 kills) and the aforementioned Davis (22 kills) each stepped up and made plays when called upon.

Up next, Tech will head back out on the road on Tuesday to take on Jackson State. The match will mark the third trip the state of Mississippi for Tech early on this season.
