Tech Uses Balanced Attack to Drop Drake in Three Games

DES MOINES, Iowa – Louisiana Tech made quick work of the Drake Bulldogs on Saturday as the Lady Techsters claimed an easy victory (31-29, 30-28, 30-23) at the Drake Bulldog Invitational.

Cristine Sant’Anna, who is Tech’s kills leader, played very sparingly in the match as the Lady Techsters (6-4) used their depth to dispose of Drake (7-3).

The Lady Techsters used a balanced attack led by Megan Rush with 12 kills and Joy Okpa with 11 kills. Kirsten Fairbanks used her first career start to post seven kills. Rush did not commit an error in 26 attempts for Tech while posting a .462 hitting percentage.

Tech made Drake’s Knapp Center feel like Thomas Assembly Center with a large group of friends and family supporting the Lady Techsters.

Among those were the parents of Tech head coach Heather Mazeitis who made trip from Leavenworth, Kan.

Both teams went back and forth in the opening game before Tech broke a 29-29 tie with two straight points to win the first game, 31-29. Fairbanks posted five kills in the first game. Rush also had five kills in the first game while not committing an error.

Tech rallied from a 25-23 deficit to take a commanding two game lead over the Bulldogs. The Lady Techsters hit .353 in game two as Laura Osterhaus came away with four kills in game two.

The solid serving of Lia Mora and Stacey Clark helped Tech build a 17-9 advantage in the third game as the Lady Techsters cruised to the victory over the home-standing Bulldogs.

On the defensive side, Okpa added 14 digs.

The Lady Techsters will take on Southeast Missouri State at 5:00 p.m. to conclude action at the tournament.
