Techsters Swept by Little Rock to Open Billiken Invitational

ST. LOUIS – The Louisiana Tech women’s volleyball team fell to Little Rock in straight sets (27-29, 14-25, 15-25) to open the Billiken Invitational on Friday from the Chaifetz Pavilion.

The Techsters (4-7) were led by freshman outside hitter Gina Cortesi. The rookie recorded nine kills on 29 attempts throughout the evening. In the first set, which Tech narrowly lost 27-29, Cortesi posted a match-best seven kills while hitting an astounding .778 in the frame.

Tech sophomore Madeline Davis also provided consistent play for the team, matching Cortesi’s kill total with nine of her own while hitting a team-best .500 for the match.

The Techsters started off hot in the first set, drawing even with the Trojans (4-6) at 12 as both teams battled neck and neck for the entirety of the frame. Little Rock reached set point at 24-20, but five straight points for the Lady Techsters gave them a 25-24 lead. Both sides went back and forth until the 27th point, when Little Rock’s Mya Robinson struck for two kills, giving the Trojans the hard-fought first set triumph.

Tech raced out to a quick 4-0 lead in the second, but a 12 -1 run from the Trojans proved to be the difference in the second frame. Little Rock outhit the Techsters .481 to .133 en route to the 2-0 lead in the contest.

In the third and final set, Little Rock never trailed, and was fueled by a late seven-point run to secure the set and the match. 

Jacie McClure led the way defensively for Tech, notching a team-high 16 digs, while freshman outside hitter Carter Mirich added 12 digs of her own.

The Techsters return to action with a pair of matches tomorrow. First, Tech will take on DePaul at 10 a.m. followed by a 7 p.m. weekend finale against the host Billikens. Live stats for the weekend can be found at slu.statbroadcast.com.
