Techsters Open Conference Season at Home with Boise
RUSTON -- With the non-conference schedule nearly wrapped up for the season, the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters (5-11; 0-0 WAC) will return to action Thursday night in the Thomas Assembly Center at 7 p.m. with the Boise State Lady Broncos (6-6; 0-0 WAC).
The match will mark the Lady Techster’s first game in the 2006 season in a very tough Western Athletic Conference.
“Now that two WAC teams are ranked in the Top 25 with (Hawaii and) New Mexico State, it makes it that much tougher,” Tech head coach Heather Mazeitis said. “It’s tough schedule, but it’s a fun schedule. That’s how the girls are looking at it. They’ve been playing hard, and now it’s time to find a win. I think conference is going to be great because the girls are having a lot of fun right now.”
Tech is led by junior Shannon Phillips who has finished with 14 double-doubles out of 16 matches so far this season which ranks first in the WAC. True freshman KC Clayton is also third in the conference in blocks per game at 1.38, while Phillips is fourth in kills per game at 3.97.
Mazeitis said she feels like her schedule up to this point has allowed her team to be prepared for WAC play.
“We’ve had a great pre-conference schedule,” Mazeitis said. “It’s a shame we could not have won more, but at the same time I feel like the non-conference schedule has better prepared us for the tough WAC matches ahead.”
The Lady Techsters split their games in the Louisiana Tech Tournament this past weekend with a win over Troy and a loss to Stephen F. Austin. The Lady Broncos also split their host tournament with a win over Gonzaga and a loss to Oregon. The Broncos also hold an all-time 6-2 record over the Lady Techsters.
