RUSTON, La. – After dropping a tough 3-1 conference-opener to Rice last weekend, the Louisiana Tech volleyball team will look to rebound in a big way this weekend, with a pair of challenging Conference USA road contests against WKU and North Texas.
The Lady Techsters (5-10, 0-1 C-USA) will first travel to Bowling Green, Kentucky, to take on the nationally-recognized (RV) Lady Toppers (15-2, 2-0 C-USA) at 6 p.m. CT on Friday night. Tech will then head to the Lone Star State for a Sunday matchup against the Mean Green (14-2, 1-1 C-USA) at 1 p.m. CT.
LA Tech battled a tough Rice squad to four sets on Sunday and saw impressive play from throughout the lineup. Sophomore middle blocker Madeline Davis exploded for career-highs in both kills (16) and hitting percentage (.625). Her season mark of .374 is seventh-highest among conference leaders and ranks 58th nationally.
Additionally, freshman Marie-Helene Verlinden stepped up against the Owls, notching career-highs in kills (14), attacks (24) and hitting percentage (.458). Her 14 kills marked the first time the rookie reached the double-digit kill plateau in her short career.
Through 15 matches this season Gina Cortesi and Marta Monne share the team lead in kills, with 148 for each. Monne, the only player with 100+ kills and 100+ digs for the Lady Techsters this season, has produced double-digit kill efforts in nine of her 13 matches played this season. The senior is also just six digs away from reaching the 800-kill, 800-dig milestone over her collegiate career.
WKU opened league play last weekend with a pair of triumphs over Florida Atlantic and Charlotte. The Lady Toppers have earned sweeps in 10 of their 15 victories so far this season and boast a league-best eight C-USA Player of the Week honors in 2017.
Senior Alyssa Cavanaugh leads the team with 248 kills (4.20 per set), while teammate Rachel Anderson sits just over the 200-kill threshold at 203 for the season. Senior setter Jessica Lucas has dished out 651 helpers this year, good for second among league leaders.
North Texas is off to an equally impressive start after most recently sweeping Big-12 foe Oklahoma on Wednesday. The Mean Green are 7-1 at home this season and are off to a 1-1 start in conference play after losing in five sets to Southern Miss and sweeping FIU last weekend.
Senior Amanda Chamberlain lead the squad with 161 kills, but the offense is balanced throughout, as five different players have recorded 100+ kills this season.
