The Lady Techsters (6-13, 1-4 C-USA) enter the weekend riding high after earning their first C-USA triumph of the season on Sunday – a decisive 3-1 home victory over UAB.
In the victory, senior leader Marta Monne posted the second-most kills among any Techster this season, with 19. Monna’s season average of 2.94 kills per set continues to lead the team, while her 182 total digs are second-most. The Milan, Italy, native also picked up her ninth double-double of the season, most among any Techster this year.
A pair of underclassmen in freshman Gina Cortesi and sophomore Madeline Davis have also provided solid play five matches into the conference season.
Cortesi is the only Lady Techster to have 150+ kills (177), 100+ digs (111) and 40+ (45) total blocks to this point in the season. The rookie has also accumulated seven matches of 10+ kills and owns the team-high in single-match kills with her 21 against UT-Martin back in August.
Meanwhile, Davis has been a consistent force up the middle, leading the team in blocks (70) and hitting percentage (.340). Those two figures also draw national attention, as her total blocks are sixth most among C-USA leaders and 125th-most nationally, while her hitting percentage is eighth highest in the league and 117th nationally.
As a team, Tech ranks in the top half of the conference in digs (1,037 – fifth) largely due to its collective mindset of “team first”. Because of this, no one player runs away with the lead in this stat category, and Tech in fact, boasts five players with 110+ digs this season (Jacie McClure – 252, Monne – 182, Carter Mirich – 162, Brooke Short – 133, Cortesi – 111).
The Techsters are also holding their opponents to just a .208 hitting percentage on the year – the seventh lowest mark in the conference.
Southern Miss enters Friday’s contest with a 12-8 overall record and a 2-2 mark in conference play. The Golden Eagles have won three of their last five matches, but most recently dropped a 3-0 decision to league-leader WKU.
A pair of dynamic outside hitters lead the Golden Eagle offensive attack this season, as Kylie Grandy and Chandler Marshall have both racked up 226 kills to pace the team. Sarah Bell’s 809 assists are most among all C-USA leaders.
All-time Tech is 3-15 against Southern Miss.
Marshall (7-13, 2-3 C-USA) is coming off of a 3-0 defeat to UTSA last Sunday. The Herd has been unable to find consistency in league play this season, and dropped its only home league match of the season – a 3-1 decision to Southern Miss.
Jac’cara Walker leads the Marshall offense with 267 kills. Her gaudy kills per set average of 4.45 is best among C-USA leaders and ranks 17th- best nationally.
Tech will be looking for its first win over the Herd, with this being the fifth-ever meeting between the two programs.
Both contests will be streamed live on CUSA.tv ($) and live stats for both matches can be found on the LA Tech Volleyball schedule page. Be sure to follow @LATechVB on Twitter for match updates.
