RUSTON, La. – The Louisiana Tech women’s volleyball team returns home to the friendly confines of the Thomas Assembly Center this weekend, with a 7 p.m. Friday showdown with Florida Atlantic, followed by a 1 p.m. Sunday match versus FIU.
Tech (6-15, 1-6 C-USA) is coming off a tough 0-2 weekend, dropping a 3-0 decision to Southern Miss and falling to Marshall on the road by a 3-1 final.
With the conference season right at the midway point, the Lady Techsters currently sit in 11th place, just 1.5 games out of the eighth spot in the Conference USA standings (the top eight teams earn automatic bids to the league’s tournament).
The Lady Techsters will be celebrating their 30-year anniversary this weekend, welcoming back alumnae for a special time of reflection since the program was established in 1987.
In league play this season, the Lady Techsters continue to follow the lead of senior Marta Monne. The captain has registered 81 kills across seven conference matches while also averaging a healthy average of 2.23 digs per set during that time (second-best on the team).
A trio of underclassmen in sophomore Madeline Davis and freshmen Gina Cortesi and Carter Mirich have also staked big contributions across the board for the Lady Techsters.
Davis continues to garner attention across the league as her .340 hitting percentage (ninth) and 1.01 blocks per set (eighth) continues to rank in the top-10 among C-USA leaders. The Mount Pulaski, Illinois, native has notched three or more total blocks in a team-best 12 matches so far this season.
Cortesi, meanwhile, has hummed along to the second-best kills per set mark on the team at 2.58. Her 196 kills have come with just 90 attack errors on the season.
Mirich has been impressive in her own right, contributing 1.84 kills per set and 2.38 digs per set. Her 154.0 points are the fourth-most on the team.
As a team, the Lady Techsters have played stingy defense these season, limiting their opponents to just a .211 hitting percentage across all matches (eighth-lowest mark in C-USA).
LA Tech has only met up with Florida Atlantic five times in their history and will be looking for its second-ever win on Friday (FAU leads 4-1).
The Owls (11-7, 2-4 C-USA) lost their only match last weekend, falling to North Texas in four sets.
Sigourney Kame paces the Florida Atlantic offense with 105 kills in conference play, good for a 4.20 kills-per-set average.
Meanwhile, the Lady Techsters own a 5-8 mark all-time against FIU.
The Panthers (2-12, 1-6 C-USA) are knotted up with Tech and UTEP in the C-USA standings – each looking for its second league win of the season.
FIU is led by the duo of Margherita Bianchin (143 kills) and Taija Thomas (136 kills) who have carried the offensive load for the team this season.
Both contests this weekend will be streamed live on CUSA.tv ($) and live stats for both matches can be found on the LA Tech Volleyball schedule page. Be sure to follow @LATechVB on Twitter for match updates.
