Volleyball Returns to Ruston for Final Homestand of 2017

Nov. 2, 2017

RUSTON, La. – The Louisiana Tech women’s volleyball team will open up a two-game homestand this weekend, hosting Charlotte on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by a Sunday matchup against North Texas at 1 p.m.

The Lady Techsters (7-18, 2-9 C-USA) will honor four seniors in Nia Myah Johnson, Jacie McClure, Marta Monne and Brooke Short prior to Sunday’s contest with the Mean Green.

Last week, Tech notched a split in its Texas road trip after defeating UTEP, 3-1 and falling to UTSA by the same final.

Senior captain Marta Monne had a spectacular weekend, amassing 36 kills over eight sets played for a 4.50 kills per set average for the weekend. The Milan, Italy, native paced Tech to its second conference win of the season as she dominated with 22 kills, while hitting .450 against UTEP last Friday.

For the season, Monne continues to lead the team with 287 kills, while her 253 digs are second most. Monne needs just 23 kills to break her previous season high of 309, set last season.

Currently, the Techsters sit just outside the postseason picture, in a three-way tie for 11th place with Middle Tennessee and UTEP. A pair of wins this weekend, complemented with some help ahead of them, could see the Lady Techsters draw to within striking distance of the eighth and final tournament spot.

Charlotte (17-9, 4-6 C-USA) has dropped its last four conference matches, after flying out of the gates with a 4-2 record in league play. The 49ers exhibit strong play at the net as evidenced by their nation-leading 310.5 total blocks. Charlotte leads C-USA in blocks per set, total blocks and opponent hitting percentage.

Offensively, Charlotte is led by Janell Sparks and Sydney Rowan who have both reached the 300-kill threshold this season (321 and 311, respectively).

Tech owns a perfect 4-0 record against the 49ers in the two team’s all-time series.

After being picked to finish sixth in the C-USA Preseason Coaches’ Poll, the Mean Green (22-2, 9-1 C-USA) have raced to the second best conference mark to this point of the season.

North Texas utilizes balance up and down the lineup, as five players have secured 195+ kills this season (Amanda Chamberlain – 268, Holly Milam – 235, Alexis Wright – 204, Barbara Teakell – 200, and Valarie Valerian -195).

The Lady Techsters are 12-12 all-time against the Mean Green.

Admission to both contests is free, but fans who can’t make it out to the TAC are encourage to tune into CUSA.TV ($) for a live stream or follow @LATechVB on Twitter for in-game updates.
