Cross Country Preparing for 2007 Championships

LOGAN, Utah -- Louisiana Tech’s cross country teams will run in the 2007 WAC Championships Saturday, Oct. 27, at the American West Heritage Center near the campus of Utah State University.

The men are slated to start at 10 a.m. while the women will start around 10:45 a.m.

"We're running five freshmen on the girls side, so we're obviously hoping for some good finishes even with the inexperience," Tech head coach Gary Stanley said. "And on our guys team we have three freshmen and two juniors. We have a lot of inexperience but there's a lot of potential and we're looking forward to a bright future for the Bulldogs."

Juniors Jace Benoit and Cory Denstel along with freshmen Kyle Davis, Steven Cortez and David Monroe will run for the men, while freshmen Lauren Gilbert, Morgan Owen, Monique Wright, Whitney Smith and Kristen Loy are suiting up for the women’s team.

The last time the men were in action was Oct. 12 at the Northwestern State Demon Invtational where the Bulldogs placed second thanks to Benoit placing third on the four-mile course with a time of 21 minutes, 10 seconds. Denstel finished sixth at 21:43.

The Techsters last competed at the Centenary Invitational finishing third place. Gilbert posted her best time of the season at 19:45.84 for 12th place, while Owen placed 20th at 21:50.32.

The men were picked to finish sixth place in the pre-championship poll while the women were picked for ninth for this weekend’s race.
