Arrizon finishes in top 25
Junior runner Carlos Arrizon finished 25th overall (31:34) at the 2002 NCAA South Central Cross Country Regional on Saturday morning at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course.
Coming off a disappointing showing at the Western Athletic Conference championships, the Bulldogs responded with a strong performance.
“I’m real pleased with the way all three runners ran,” head coach Gary Stanley said. “Anytime you have somebody finish in the top 25 it says a lot about them and our program.”
Freshman Dustin Wiltcher ran a time of 33:13 and along with freshman Karoly Varga, who ran a 33:25, finished 68th and 76th respectively in a field of 141 student-athletes at the 10,000-meter race.
The Arkansas men took their 14th consecutive title, edging out WAC power SMU 47-49.
“Our guys raced well, and I was glad to see the WAC well represented,” Stanley said.
“Our team rebounded well and beat a lot of people who had previously beat them at the WAC championships. This could be a stepping stone for our kids.”
The regionals marked the last cross-country event of the season for Tech, but all the competing Bulldogs will be on the squad next year.
